Rasserman Technologies Snd Bhd convets biomass to bioethanol as part of the global need for an alternative source of energy. The company is pioneering in this Green technology in line with the global carbon credit initiatives and Kyoto carbon emission treaty. Below shows some of the company's current activities in the production of Bioethanol from Biomass

Basically, Bioethanol from Biomass or renewable source has a number of advantages over conventional fuels. It could come from a renewable resource i.e. crops and not from a finite resource (and the crops it derives from can grow well) or waste (Biomass) which needs to be disposed safely to the environment. Thus, Rasserman Technologies could provide the processing technologies to cater for the above Green Initiatives while meeting the carbon credit protocol.

Another benefit of bioethanol over fossil fuels is the greenhouse gas emissions. The road transport network accounts large percentage of all greenhouse gas emissions and through the use of bioethanol, some of these emissions will be reduced as the fuel crops absorb the CO2 they emit through growing.

Also, blending bioethanol with petrol will help extend the life of the world's diminishing oil supplies and ensure greater fuel security, avoiding heavy reliance on oil producing nations. By encouraging bioethanol’s use, the rural economy would also receive a boost from growing the necessary crops. Bioethanol is also biodegradable and far less toxic that fossil fuels.

In addition, by using bioethanol in older engines can help reduce the amount of carbon monoxide produced by the vehicle thus improving air quality. Another advantage of bioethanol is the ease with which it can be easily integrated into the existing road transport fuel system. In quantities up to 5%, bioethanol can be blended with conventional fuel without the need of engine modifications. Bioethanol is produced using familiar methods, such as fermentation, and it can be distributed using the same petrol forecourts and transportation systems as before.

Typically, Ethanol can be produced from biomass by the hydrolysis and sugar fermentation processes. Biomass wastes contain a complex mixture of carbohydrate polymers from the plant cell walls known as cellulose, hemi cellulose and lignin. In order to produce sugars from the biomass, the biomass is pre-treated with acids or enzymes in order to reduce the size of the feedstock and to open up the plant structure. Here, Rasserman Technologies also explores the company's proprietary technology such as steam blast technology as mentioned earlier.

The cellulose and the hemi cellulose portions are broken down (hydrolysed) by enzymes, dilute acids or steam blasting into sucrose sugar that is then fermented into ethanol. The lignin which is also present in the biomass is normally used as a fuel for the ethanol production plants boilers.

There are three principle methods of extracting sugars from biomass. These are concentrated acid hydrolysis, dilute acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Novel Business Using Biomass Energy from Palm Oil Industry in Malaysia is being explored at the moment. This will provide profitable area for novel business to which biomass energy can be supplied from palm oil industry with a reasonable price for novel business.

Rasserman Technologies also provides a complete methane fermentation system and change lagoon area into a profitable area. Below are some of the benefits created by Rasserman for Malaysia:

    1. reduce GHG by sealing the lagoons.
    2. Prevention of undesirable smell of lagoon by modern treatment.
    3. Local employment can be encouraged from new business.
    4. provides electricity using the methane
    5. fermentation system for novel business with a competitive price.

Based on the economic growth in Malaysia, the development of new oil palm plantations in the tropical rainforest will soon be no longer economically viable. In order to meet the increasing demand for palm oil in the future, palm oil industry must evolve into other business opportunity such as the source for renewable energy as described above.
